These registers document the treatment received by sick inmates in the prison hospital. Information includes date of entry, prisoner's name, disease or ailment, treatment prescribed, and discharge information. One register (1909-1921) also includes the number of days inmate was excused from work because of illness, and the number of days lost from work.

Legislation establishing a penal system in Kentucky was passed in 1798, and by 1800, the first prison west of the Allegheny Mountains, the Kentucky State Penitentiary, was completed on a one-acre tract of land in Frankfort.
